The Basic Eight CPQ Scales

Though CraftSystems has developed over a dozen different tests and surveys, The Craft Personality Questionnaire (CPQ) is by far our most popular product. The CPQ takes less than 20 minutes to administer and generates your choice of six interpretive reports to help you select, motivate, and develop your personnel. The CPQ measures eight primary (independent) personality traits and numerous secondary traits that are described in our Manager's Coaching Reports and CPQ Compatibility Charts. These traits have been repeatedly validated as primary predictors of employee "drive and motivation," especially in sales professions. The following are descriptions of the CPQ's "Basic Eight" personality traits:

Goal Orientation (Go) - -
Closely associated with the CPP's Emotional Intensity (E) scale, this trait measures your employee's proactive, creative, dynamic energy that values the goals/results more than the process/system. Bottom Line: Does s/he have the "Will Do" drive/motivation to reach your goals?

Detail-orientation (Do) - -
Closely associated with the CPP's Intuition (I) scale (reversed), this trait describes your employee's reliance upon preparation and analysis of information to make decisions as opposed to relying upon instinct, feelings, and experience. Bottom Line: Does s/he obsess on the facts, figures, and details to make a decision?

Social Drive (Sd) - -
Closely related to the CPP Recognition (R) scale, this trait describes your employee's motivation to initiate relationships, seek public recognition, and entertain others. Bottom Line: Does s/he require frequent social contact or does s/he prefer to work alone or in small groups?

Need to Nurture (Nn) - -
Closely related to the CPP Sensitivity to the Needs of Others (S) scale, this scale describes your employee's desire to maintain close, intimate relationships and serve the needs of others. Bottom Line: Does s/he enjoy customer service and teamwork that requires paying attention to the needs of others?

Social Confidence (Sc) - -
Closely associated with the CPP Assertiveness (A) scale, this trait describes your employee's ability to communicate with ease and confidence, even in stressful situations, and the ability to confront others when necessary. Bottom Line: Can s/he gravitate to leadership positions that require confidence and social poise?

Skepticism (Sk) - -
Closely associated with the CPP Trust (T) scale (reversed), this trait describes your employee's tendency to initially judge others negatively and require that they earn his or her trust over time. Bottom Line: Will s/he be skeptical of your intentions and not give you the benefit of the doubt?

Good Impression (Gi) - -
Closely related to the CPP Exaggeration (X) scale, this trait reflects your employee's tendency to exaggerate strengths and downplay weaknesses to leave the most favorable impression. Bottom Line: Does s/he have such strong ego defenses that s/he won't admit mistakes or seek self-improvement? Is s/he "coachable?"

Need for Control (Nc) - -
This scale measures your employee's drive to be independent and in control of others (as opposed to seeking peace and harmony). Bottom Line: Does s/he have such a "strong will" that s/he requires a position that allows maximum autonomy and power? Can s/he defer to you when required?
